Forgiven Much = Loves Much

Jesus explained a profound principle

in the book of John 7:36-50,

that the ‘religious people’ couldn’t seem to grasp.

Jesus was eating dinner with

a prominent Pharisee named Simon when

in walked a ‘a sinful woman.’

The scripture doesn’t define how she had been ‘sinful,’

but based upon the context,

she had probably been sexually ‘loose,’

and many people in town probably knew it.

The woman entered the Pharisees house

and walked up behind Jesus.

With tears of uncontrollable repentance,

she began to weep

as she kissed Jesus’ feet

and washed them with her tears.

She then dried Jesus’ feet with her hair

as she anointed His feet

with an expensive fragrant oil.

At this point, Simon, the self-righteous Pharisee,

was incensed and replied to those in his presence,

“This man, if He were a prophet,

would know who and what manner of woman

this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.”

Jesus then replied, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”

“There was a certain creditor who had two debtors.

One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.

And when they had nothing with which to repay,

he freely forgave them both.

Tell Me, which of them will love him more?”

Simon replied, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.”

Jesus replied, “You have answered correctly.”

Then He turned to the woman

and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman?

I entered your house;

you gave Me no water for My feet,

but she has washed My feet with her tears

and wiped them with the hair of her head.

You gave Me no kiss, but this woman

has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in.

You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman

has anointed My feet with fragrant oil.

Therefore, I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven,

for she loved much.

But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”

Here is the profound truth that Jesus attempted to teach

the self-righteous religious teacher.

The ‘greatest sinners’ become the ‘greatest lovers’

because they are fully aware that they have been forgiven of so much.
