Is Truth Real?
The Critical Importance of Discovering Truth
Is Truth Real?
To some this may seem like an absurd question, but in today's society where the media and social media attempt to manipulate everything we see and believe, how can we genuinely know truth? Is truth real? What is truth? What is the purpose of truth? And finally, where can we discover truth? These are all crucial questions to the reasoning mind. So let's begin with our opening question: Is truth real?
To answer this question, let me illustrate with a simple math equation:
Is this true? The answer is no. This is error or a lie.
1+1 has always has equalled 2 and it always will. Any number other than 2 at the end of this equation (1+1) is wrong/error/or a lie. This means every number other than 2 at the end of this equation is wrong. This also means there are an infinite number of wrong choices or lies and only one correct answer which is true. Think on that long and hard.
There are an infinite number of lies and only one truth.
Humanity has determined that 1+1=2 and this is a non-negotiable truth.
The problem that has long plagued humanity is this thought, "There is either no truth, or truth is relative, meaning what may be true for me isn't necessarily truth for you."
What if we took that same approach to math? 1+1= whatever is relative to me.
Would that be true? Absurdity.
Truth is very real. Truth also helps us determine what lies are. Without clearly definable truths, we can't discern error or lies. Truth is a guiding light.
Truth in All Areas of Life
The example I have chosen has to do with mathmatical truth. Math has truths. Truth however isn't simply limited to math. Every field in life has truths. Science has truths. Science also has lies. Psychology has truth. Psychology also has lies. Spiritually speaking there are many lies and only a few truths. There are truths about eating, health, and weith loss. In fact, many people make a whole lot of money touting this marketing pitch, "Remember so and so weight loss fad, it was a lie, here is the truth about weight loss..." Are you starting to see the truth? The world is full of lies, half truths, partial truths, and hidden truth. The trick is to discover the truth, and having enough discernment to know lies versus the truth.
When I was in school I used to take true and false exams. I learned that if there is even the slightest error in the statement, it makes the entire statement false (or a lie). Truth then is always pure. The whole truth and nothing but the truth.
What Happens When Everyone Disagrees about Truth or Tells Lies?
What if humanity began to believe lies about mathmatical truth? What if people began to believe 1+1=3 or 5 or even 1 Million. What if everyone began to redefine 1+1 based upon their own experience? How would that affect business transactions? What if everyone had a different answer? What would happen to our bank accounts, cash registers, checkbooks, cash apps, if we all began to believe lies about mathematical truth? Society would begin to break down. A financial chaos would begin to unfold upon humanity. If everyone began to believe lies about the simple equation 1+1, how might that unfold upon humanity?
This is exactly why the world is in such a state of chaos today. Many are believing lies about our history, our morality, our spirituality, and our ultimate destiny. We have been taught lies by our schools, professors and even religious leaders. We have been sold lies by the media, Hollywood, and even social media. The world is a cesspool of lies. Why? Because lies sell. Lies make money. Lies make lots of money.
And lies always have but one purpose: manipulation and control. Ultimately, lies lead to sin, confusion, choas, and ultimately death. Understand this truth: lies always eventually lead to death. Lies break people and eventually society down.
The First Lie and It's Consequences: Death and Seperation
The very first lie was told by a fallen angel to a woman. The angel's name was Lucifer or Satan, and the woman's name was Eve. When Satan lied to Eve in the garden of Eden, it brought about human sin (disobedience), and Eve's sin brought about wrong thinking (confusion) and ultimately spiritual separation from God: spiritual death. Connect the dots.
The Devil's lie manipulated Eve to sin which led to spiritual death and eventually physical death. Cain killed Abel. Lies always cause pain and eventually lead to death. Therefore, lies are poison to heart and soul. Understanding this, what value do lies really have? None. Therefore think, speak, live, and teach the truth.
The Truth and It's Benefits: Life and Love
Truth, on the other hand, leads to right thinking and right actions. Truth also leads to morality, faithfulness, purpose, calling, and destiny. Truth leads to order. Truth leads to life.
In fact, Jesus claimed, "I am the way, the truth, and the life." Connect these dots. The way that Jesus proclaimed was truth, and His truth always led to life. When the religious teachers were manipulating the masses because of their personal greed, Jesus was courageous and spoke truth.
Truth is also the basis or foundation of love. Love only exists with the truth. For love to exist and thrive in a relationship truth must be the foundation of both people's thinking, words, and actions. Truth creates trustworthiness. A person of character who speaks truth, lives truth, and keeps their promises is called "trustworthy," or literally "truthworthy." Truth restores people and builds society up. Truth creates life, harmony, order, and trust.
Here are the conclusions to answer our first questions: Is Truth Real and What is the Purpose of Truth? Truth does indeed exist in every field of life and truth is required to create healthy relationships, healthy families, and a ultimately a healthy society.
Where Can Spiritual, Relational, Psychological, and Financial Truth be Discovered?
Many people have a different opinion on this answer but having spent a lifetime in search of truth, I have come up with one clear definable answer.
Truth is found only in God.
God is truth, He represents all truth, and therefore He speaks truth.
What if you are agnostic, or atheist, or some other religion? You might ask, "How can you know God is real?" The answer to this question is profoundly simple. When you call your best friend on the phone how do you they are real or alive? They answer the phone and speak with you.
How do I know God is real? He speaks with me. Ultimately, I hear His voice. Because I have learned to hear His voice, I know He is real. And because I know He is real, I have tested our friendship and I know He guides me with truth. I know I can trust His voice, because He never tells me lies, He always speaks truth. True friendships are always based upon truth.
So, truth is discovered by being in a relationship with God.
God's Truth: The Bible
God has also provided humanity with a manual of truth called "The Bible." The Bible is a collection of letters that men and women who had a relationship with God recorded about their experiences with Him. These letters span millenia. These letters also contain truth about who God is and how He operates in dealing with with humanity. The Bible contains truth and is the foundation upon which many societies have been built including the American Foundation.
Here is just one example of a science truth that was written in scripture in approximately 740B.C. Isaiah wrote that the earth was a circle (or round) but yet many people believed the earth to be flat all the way up until approximately 1522 when Ferdinand Magellan circumnavigated the globe and proved the earth to be spherical. Thus God told His prophet Isaiah that the earth was round 2262 years before it was actually proven to be true. Here is the passage:
Do you not know? Have you not heard?
Has it not been declared to you from the beginning?
Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
It is He (God) who sits above the circle of the earth.
The Bible reveals a vast number of truths across many spectrums which have been proven time and time again.
The Bible also repeatedly records that when a society abandons God and truth, it eventually breaks down. When society embraces God and His truth, it is restored, made whole and flourishes. In fact the Bible even reveals this truth:
Dueteronomy 28:1-13 (NIV)
If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.
2 All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God:
3 You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.
4 The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.
5 Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed.
6 You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.
7 The Lord will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven.
8 The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The Lord your God will bless you in the land he is giving you.
9 The Lord will establish you as his holy people, as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands of the Lord your God and walk in obedience to him.
10 Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they will fear you.
11 The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity—in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground—in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.
12 The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations...
13 The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top.
You can see from this passage that God is serious about truth which leads to a proper relationship with Him, and then right actions toward Him (obedience), which then leads to multiplied blessings.
So yes, truth is indeed very real. All spiritual, and relational truth (and many more fields) are discovered in God and Jesus. The purpose of truth is to lead us to discover the way of life and the way of love. And having discovered life and love, remaning in the truth with obedience, will lead us to abundant prosperity. That is financial truth. Therefore, the next time you are tempted to tell a lie, stop, and instead, speak the truth.
